ZFA is honored to have provided structural engineering services for the Hyperspace sculpture at The Donum Estate winery in Sonoma, California. The sculpture consists of a 20-foot-tall golden pyramid spanning 30 feet by 30 feet, crafted from 24k gold-coated, stainless steel. Within the pyramid is a futuristic space organ made of nine mirror-finished, stainless steel sculptures.
Surrounding the pyramid are nine standalone, thin profile, inverted pendulum shapes ranging from 15 feet to 30 feet tall, also constructed of mirror-finished, stainless steel, and cantilevered from the ground.
Designed to create an ever-evolving soundscape, the main pyramid and surrounding structures work as a gigantic instrument, encompassing visitors in choreographed music that engages the senses and evolves with wind, temperature, and humidity.
ZFA provided structural design and analysis for the delicate structures and intricate detailing for connections, such that they are concealed from view. We worked directly with the artist and fabricator to coordinate code seismic and wind requirements, and ultimately specified the main structural elements, the fixed anchorage connections at the base, and the deepened concrete foundations and tie beams for stability.
