Principal

Ryan began his engineering career with ZFA in 2008 and has played a key role in developing and growing the San Francisco office over the last decade. His technical expertise encompasses many sectors and building types, including complex retrofits, intricate solar tracking arrays, and OSHPD hospital projects. He is also well-versed in the evolution of the ASCE 41 national standard for seismic evaluation and retrofit of existing buildings, contributing worked examples to a recent Applied Technologies Council publication, ATC 124.

Highlights:

    • Development of a comprehensive Seismic Safety Program for the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), including:
      • Rapid evaluation of over 300 district school buildings
      • Design for the seismic retrofit of five public OUSD school buildings
    • Extensive experience with:
      • Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD)
      • Division of the State Architect (DSA)
    • Work with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center upgrading the hospital campus’ Nonstructural Performance Category to meet the State’s SB 1953 regulations, including nonstructural retrofit work in the hospital’s energy plant

Ryan brings special expertise in designing structural support systems for utility-scale tracking and stationary solar arrays for large photovoltaic firms throughout the country and internationally. He is named on multiple patents for custom-designed solar support systems.
